Different types of HVAC systems

The acronym HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and it’s the broadly used term to describe equipment used to keep homes at a comfortable temperature. This article is meant to briefly give you a basic understanding of different types of residential HVAC systems, so it helps you decide which type best suits your needs.

1. Split systems

This is the most common types of HVAC systems. Split indicates there are two separate parts, heating and cooling. It composes of indoor and outdoor units that are connected with copper tubing. It normally serve as a main heating and cooling source as it provides year-round comfort.

2. Hybrid split system/ Dual Fuel system

Conventional HVAC setups include a furnace and an air conditioner whereas a hybrid split system comprises a furnace and a heat pump. With a hybrid system, you set an ideal temperature. If the outdoor temperature falls below or rises above this point, the system assumes control of your home's temperature.

3. Duct free (Mini-split)

This is a growing category due to accessibility of the systems and is mostly used as an upgraded system over window units. This system typically does not require duct work, and indoor and outdoor units are simply connect with copper tubing and electric wire.

4. Packaged heating and air conditioning system

This is a contained heating and cooling unit. The air that’s produced from the same unit eliminates the need for having two separate units for heating and cooling.
